Bicycle Tour: The Süsel Death March of 1945

The Ahrensbök Memorial and the Scharbeutz Regional Museum invite you to join a guided bike tour on Wednesday, July 22, along the route of the death march taken by concentration camp prisoners in April 1945.

The approximately 20-kilometer tour starts in Haffkrug and includes stops at the Cap Arcona Memorial Cemetery, the memorial stele, the “Death Barn” in Süsel (photo), the memorial stele in Sierksdorf, and the new commemorative plaque at the Haffkrug pier. The tour focuses on the death marches through East Holstein and the sinking of the prisoner ships “Cap Arcona” and “Thielbek” on May 3, 1945, in Lübeck Bay.
Sven-Michael Veit will lead and provide commentary for the tour.

Time and place: Wednesday, July 22, 10 a.m., Haffkrug, Haffwiesenpark, Wiesenweg parking lot.
Route: Approximately 20 kilometers, about three hours, partly on field and forest trails; participants must bring their own bicycles.
Participation: free of charge; donations welcome.
