Lecture in Heiligenhafen

The literature and history workshop “Das BullAuge” invites you to a slide presentation on Friday, August 21, 2026, titled “Death in the Baltic Sea: The Cap Arcona Disaster of 1945 and Its Memorial Sites,” presented by Prof. Dr. Norbert Fischer.

The announcement reads:
"On May 3, 1945, just five days before the end of the war, more than 7,000 people died off the coast of Neustadt in Ostholstein—mostly concentration camp prisoners from Neuengamme who had been transported shortly before to ships such as the Cap Arcona and the Thielbek. Many burned to death or drowned; survivors were shot while fleeing—just days before their potential liberation. 
The slide presentation introduces the memorial sites and cemeteries in Ostholstein (including Grube, Grömitz, Haffkrug, Neustadt, and Timmendorfer Strand) within their historical context. Detlev Uhle will provide
musical accompaniment for the evening.”
